And always the Great Eye watching, watching
When I first read Lord Of the Rings, a tattered copy from a local library in my home town, I was enchanted. It really was an accident that I got the book. My monthly fee was overdue when I went to return one of the borrowed books. The librarian plainly denied giving me any new books. Looking around I saw this really old and torn book, probably going to be dumped. I asked if I can take that and come back next week with the money. I could see some pity in his eyes at the 18 year old. He said it is missing more than 100 pages and we don’t have the next two parts. It was 5 years later that I got a holographic card in a cornflakes box in Munich which brought all the memories back. A fellow called Peter Jackson was bringing the spectacle to the screen in a year. I went to the local shop and bought everything written by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Photography or any art in the beginning is often of things. As one advances to the next stage and masters enough technical skills, naturally is drawn to what it is about. When I saw this group of trees I was startled and almost heard Golum saying - And always the Great Eye watching, watching.
Without a doubt, Tolkien created an epic fiction which inspired many more. However, the Lord of the Rings remains a firm favorite. And still holds the top spot. The magical world of a bespectacled orphan comes pretty close.
